  1. During these first two chapter Tom travels to colleges around the country being a teacher. He has a wife Louise and a son Bruce. Louise is pregnant with Lynn, but while she is pregnant Louise gets the German Measles. Lynn shows signs of being deaf but also shows signs of not being deaf. The parents do not know for sure if she is deaf or not.

While Louise was pregnant the doctors kept on saying that the baby was going to be healthy, but she kept on asking if there was a way she could get a abortion. The doctor said that no one in the country could do a abortion. Later on in the story as Tom was waiting in the waiting room for his baby to be born he reads a article in a magazine that says that many Women who have gotten the Measles while they are pregnant have gotten a abortion. I am asking why did the doctor not recommend this choice to them. I think it is because the doctor truly thought that their was not going to be anything wrong with their baby. Please comment if you think otherwise or agree.

    1. I agree with you Chase. Their doctor did not really believe that she had contracted the german measles and he was pretty confident that even if she did the baby would be healthy anyway. So I think that he just wanted to be positive and not worry them.

  2. Tom and Louise are a young couple who have a young son named Bruce. They decide to go on a summer long camping trip with a stop for a class in Minnesota then continue on from there. Through their travels Louise contracts german measles and find out shortly after that Louise is pregnant with a baby girl. The doctor assure them that their new baby Lynn is healthy and there are no concerns.

I think that I would be first mad at the doctors that said everything was fine. They are doctors and should know whether or not something is wrong with a baby. I know that isn't right but I would still probably feel that way in the beginning. I can't imagine the not knowing part of where you think everything is fine then the baby does something to make you question that. They test her hearing and vision and convince themselves that she is okay then do it over and over again because they think did she hear that? Can she see this? Constantly questioning everything would be really stressful. I know that diseases can transfer to an unborn child but would be frustrated with waiting and worrying for a long period of time. I would want to know as soon as possible so I could help in any way that I could. I would want to learn everything I could about the condition and be able to be there for her.

    1. I agree Mr. Brennan. I would not want to wait for months and months thinking that my baby is normal, but then suddenly finding out that he or she is a something wrong. The doctors in the story really do not know what they are doing. I hope that everything works for the baby.

    2. I like your summary very nice. I like how you interpret questions into your 2nd paragraph. I like how you made it personal in your last sentence nobody would want to wait and see if their baby was born with a problem.

  3. Tom and Louise are a married couple in a suburb outside of Chicago. They have a son and Bruce and Louise is pregnant. In the first chapter, the family goes to Minnesota to an institute where Tom has a summer job. During his vacation, Bruce gets measles from two boys that he made friends with. It wasn't long after he was better that pregnant Louise had the symptoms of German measles. Things had become better for the family when Louise had given birth to a healthy baby girl named Lynn.

In chapter 2, Louise's parents came into town for a visit and stayed for the usual parade. At this parade when the sirens from the police and fire cars and Lynn had not flinched while asleep. While they were watching fireworks, Lynn only twitched. Louise went to get Lynn from her crib and she didn't move.
