  1. Lynn kept speaking and watching Louise talk and was picking up ion the words and phrases. They weren't sure if she was just copying or she understood what was being said. They went to Chicago's Hearing Society meetings to understand a little more about hearing loss. Lynn also learned to match colors.Wheaton came to an end for the family.

I agree with how Lynn's parents would be concerned about if Lynn was copying what their mouths were saying, or if she actually knew what they were saying and if it made sense or not. It's good that they went to meetings and interacted with other parents who have deaf children.

    1. I agree with you Annie that it was good for them to go to the meetings. It's important for people with the same issues to talk to each other so they can learn from them. It also helps to not feel like you are alone or that no one understands what you are going through.

    2. I agree, If my child were deaf, I would be concerned if they understood what I was saying or not. I also agree in their decision to go to Chicago and I felt bad that they could not make it to the second meeting because of the snow.

    3. I agree to disagree. Lynn is too young for the parents to know if she copying them. I think that Lynn is copying because they the same word to her over and over again. The child doesn't know better, Lynn probably thinks that it is some game that she is winning by copying her parents. I just think that it is too young to tell.

  2. They were trying to teach her to speak and learn through repetition and constantly speaking to her so she could understand the sounds of the words or phrases. It was not working that good and they weren't sure she was understanding what they were saying. They went to Chicago Hearing Society to try to learn more about Lynn and what she was going through.

I think that going to the Chicago Hearing Society was a good place for them to not only learn about their daughter but for them to also talk to other parents of deaf children. Talking to other people that have either gone through or are going through the same issues that you are is good and you learn a lot at the same time. It gives you other peoples views that maybe you would not have thought about. I can imagine that it was very frustrating for Lynn to constantly have things repeated to her and being expected to learn when she cannot truly understand what they are saying. I know I would be frustrated if someone was constantly repeating themselves and expecting me to hear something if I couldn't hear.

    1. I agree, it is good for them to hear other peoples views and to think about it, like how they were thinking about the last man to talk at the meetings and all his problems. I also agree, I couldn't imagine how frustrating it would be to constantly have people repeating things all around me and not knowing what they mean, but on the other hand i believe that is how she is going to learn.

    2. I agree it is good for them to learn about their daughter through the Chicago Hearing Society by learning about her deafness. I like how you incorporated your opinion on how frustrated you would be if nobody could understand you.

    3. Robert has done it again!! I agree with your statement about how it is good for the parents to go Chicago Hearing Society. Going to this society can really give them other peoples point of views and struggles which might help them teaching Lynn in the long run.

  3. Louise and her husband are truly dedicated parents. From going to meeting in Chicago to the learning program they received in the mail and continue to teach her everyday. Their entire day is based around teaching her and they incorporate her lessons into everything they do. They also hire a private teacher for her. Louise begins to show her frustration when they go on vacation and her husband still wants to "play teacher."

I support Louise and her husband in everything they do for Lynn. I think they are very good parents and Lynn will realize how lucky she was when she grows up. I also agree with Lousie's husband when he realizes that deaf children need to be taught unlike hearing children who learn from their own experiences in the hearing world. I also feel that this situation is almost like helen keller when they hire the private teacher to come to their house and work with Lynn. I also like how Louise and her husband turn off the sound on the TV and try to lip read to see what Lynn is going through. I know if I was in this situation I wouldn't be handling it as well or calming as they are. It must be hard for them and the lack of knowledge people have. While I'm reading this book I sometimes want to say "I wish they knew about Sign Language!"

    1. I like your acknowledgments to them being good parents and how Lynn is lucky to have them as parents.I like the comparison to Helen Keller I think it is like that a lot. I like how said that you wish that they knew about Sign Language and I hope they do eventually.

  4. In these 2 chapters, Louise and her husband go to a seminar to teach parents with deaf children. They are able to hear about other parents whose kids are deaf and how they are dealing with it. Tom and Louise try to do the John Tracey course but found out that lip reading is much harder than they realized. Louise hires a teacher named Jill Corey to help Lynn lip read. For Spring Break, the whole family went camping in Indiana.

I like these chapters because I can see how much Tom and Louise are working as parents to help their daughter. They figure it out that giving Lynn a normal life is not easy at all. I like how they went to that class with other parents with deaf children. It must have been sad to them to see other parents reaction to the other parents' stories. I like how they hired a teacher to help her later on in life. I love how both parents had Bruce help with Lynn's lesson with the word ball. They are being good parents by how much hey are doing for their daughter when she's only a baby. I'm glad that Lynn is starting to lip read so she can understand her parents.

    1. I like what you said how giving Lynn a normal life won't be easy. It really wont, her parents have never had an experience like this. I also feel they will still make it work because they are truly devoted parents.

  5. In these two chapters the parents were still talking to Lynn constantly and trying to teach her words and phrases. The parents would go to conferences and learn about deaf and hard of hearing people. They got a tutor named Jill that is also helping Lynn talk. Tom got a letter from Oklahoma saying he can go the school there so this will be their last days in Wheaton.

I like these chapters because it shows that the parents really care for their child and know that the first years of the child's life are the most critical ones. I don't like how their talking conversations are not helping Lynn but hopefully, talking will come to Lynn. The activities that Jill is doing with Lynn are a little bit out of the ordinary, but hopefully they work.

  6. In chapters seven and eight Lynn's parents tried harder to teach her to speak. Her parents tried to repeat sounds and phrases over and over in hope that she would repeat it back to them. Their efforts were't working so they went to the Chicago Hearing Society. They went there to learn more about speech and hearing loss.

I really feel for Lynn's parents in these chapters because they are basically going in blind to this. Both her parents are hearing, and they have never had to deal with hearing loss like this. I also agree with them for going to the CHS, because all it can do is help them learn how to be better parents for Lynn. It will help them be able to understand how to help Lynn with everyday life and tasks.
